LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- New Albany is opening citywide cooling centers in anticipation of a hot summer this year.

Clergy from 12 different congregations in the southern Indiana city have come together to launch the program.

The goal is to make sure that no one dies from a preventable heat death.

New Albany's new cooling stations are open now through Aug. 31 from 2-7 p.m., Monday through Friday, when the heat index reaches 100 degrees or higher.

According to the Homeless Coalition of Southern Indiana, the weekly status of the centers will be posted regularly on social media. They're also looking for volunteers to help.

Some of the congregations include Culbertson Baptist, Park Christian, St. Paul's, Mt. Tabor and St. Mark's.
